Chapman Undergrad Explores Career Paths at Golden State Foods

Alyssa Banawa

Growing up in Irvine with a close view of her father’s successful auto tinting business, Alyssa Banawa felt a pull toward business. When it was time for college, she chose Chapman University, majoring in business administration with a minor in economics.

In 2024, she was excited to work with Golden State Foods (GSF) in a new internship experience the company designed with CEO Leadership Alliance Orange County (CLAOC).

Alyssa had the opportunity to work in HR and communications. She supported the Global Branding and Communications team on projects including an audit of social media to identify new opportunities for GSF to connect with customers on those channels. She also helped develop slides and materials for quarterly communications meetings.

“This program definitely helps build a better Orange County,” said Kate Starr, Group Vice President, Communications, Golden State Foods. “It’s leveraging the strength of the business community and matching it up with the best talent coming out of our local universities.”

Alyssa learned how to be successful in a professional workplace and about many aspects of GSF’s business operations. She received career coaching from GSF and CLAOC on effective communication and gained insights into her work style and tendencies. Alyssa also received career advice from conversations with some of GSF’s top executives. Following her initial six-week internship, she was extended for two more weeks working with GSF’s legal department.

Impact Highlights

Alyssa developed key professional skills:

  • Understanding of business-to-business (B2B) communication strategies
  • Workplace communication skills
  • Project management and reporting capabilities

Today, Alyssa is confidently navigating the transition from college to career with the goal of working as a communications coordinator.

Alyssa encourages students to, “Remain open to all opportunities and apply widely—it’s surprising what you can learn. I had not heard of GSF, but I found them a great company and developed so many skills through my experience. Once students find an opportunity,  make sure to show up for themselves. Plan ahead in order to show up at their best—this is something my cross-country coach instilled in me!”
